On the voice in our heads

Which brings about the about the very interesting possibility—as suggested by the psychologist Julian Jaynes in his increasingly influential book ‘The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind’—that the modern highly-individualized human Ego that has been so venerated in the 19th and 20th centuries may be a comparatively recent development in both human history (and perhaps the history of the Universe), and that ‘the voice in our head’ that we now all constantly hear, a few thousand years ago would only arise only in times of severe crisis and danger.
