I think the endgame of “cancel culture” is building up collective impatience for endless word games without actual change on the ground. The ones getting the most done are the ones talking the least, and vice versa. It is the frustration of decades of gridlock+austerity+trickledown with nothing to show for it except a great theoretical GDP score and richer billionaires.
Proponents of “free speech” are in this view fighting the wrong battle. This is not a hypothetical battle for whether reason enjoys primacy, this is apocalyptic Karen asking for the manager saying “this POS you sold me doesn’t work. I don’t care about your hypotheticals or theories. Your jig is up, I see through it now. Either make it work or give me my time/money/sweat/sanity back or else...”
What’s the point of self-congratulating ourselves about how reasonable we are while boiling ourselves to death in coronastew, with not even the guarantee of toilet paper while watching reruns as superstorms rattle the very foundations of our rental apartments? Does anyone really think the young people who are turning up on the streets in the millions to protest climate inaction, racial injustice, democratic rule etc care an iota about the inconvenience of an opinion writer shopping for a new publication to host her soapbox in the middle of a pandemic? Or sparing second thoughts for a tone-deaf tenured professor who insists that the world is getting better you should really be thankful? Puhleeze.

It’s just intellectuals now. It will be politicians, financiers, VCs and other political class parasites next. Rules for separating wheat from chaff simple - what did you stand for, what actually changed on your watch good or bad, and if you couldn’t stop the bullshit why do we need you even?
